Post Munchlaxx's Complete Castle Wars Guide [Wiki Application] - August 13th, 2011, 09:21

Castle Wars is a SAFE minigame. No items are lost on death, unless an unfortunate glitch happens to you which can be easily prevented (scroll down and see the Known Bugs and Glitches section). You will be skulled as soon as you attack someone in the arena.

What is Castle Wars?

Castle Wars is a mini-game released to the general NR community on the 6th of June, 2011. It is similar to capture-the-flag, but with a NR twist.

How to get to Castle Wars

  • The official world for Castle Wars is World 4, and the command to access Castle Wars can only be accessed on World 4.
  • To get to Castle Wars, type in the chat-box; ::cw and your character will be teleported to the Castle Wars lobby.
  • In the lobby, there is a bank chest in the South-East corner, and to the North is Mamma Bufetta, who will trade you items for your Castle Wars points.
  • There are portals, which will lead you to a waiting room corresponding the the portal. The Saradomin Portal teleports you to the Saradomin Team's waiting room, the Zamorak Portal teleports you to the Zamorak Team's waiting room and the Guthix Portal teleports you to the team with less players.
The Castle Wars Lobby

Players cannot wear helmets or capes while inside the arena, so remember to bank all helmets and capes. They will be replaced with a coloured Castle Wars Cloak which corresponds to the team you are in.

Game Mechanics
  • The aim of Castle Wars is to take the enemy's standard, or flag, from their castle and return it to the standard in your own castle's keep, gaining 1 point each time.
  • Points can only be scored, when your own flag is safe and is no longer in the possession of the opposing team.
  • Players must prevent the opposing team from taking your standard by defending your castle, while also trying to take the flag from the opposing team's castle.
  • If the opposing team has your flag and your team has the other team's flag, the aim is to kill the one on their team holding the flag so that your team can score a point, while also making sure that the opposing team doesn't kill your own team's flag holder.
  • Each game lasts for 20 minutes.
  • There is a 5 minute waiting time after each game where players can join a team.
  • The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winning team.
  • You will gain 30 CastleWar Points if the game ends with your team winning.
  • You will gain 20 CastleWar Points if the game ends in a tie.
  • You will gain 10 CastleWar Points if the game ends with your team losing.
  • You will not gain or lose any extra points if you kill a member of the opposing team, score a point or if you die.
  • You must have dealt 250 Melee or Range damage to the opposing team (Magic damage does not count!!!), or have scored at least one point to gain CastleWar Points!!! Otherwise the game will say you were AFKing and did not gain points. - Not 100% sure that scoring will not give you the AFKing thing, I'll post when I find out.
  • CastleWar Points can be traded to Mamma Bufetta in the North-Eastern corner of the Castle War Lobby, for a number of items.
  • Any projectiles used (arrows, bolts etc.) are not picked up automatically, and Ava's devices do not work. So it is up to the players to pick them up.
  • Items cannot be equipped in the waiting rooms, but they can be un-equipped. So make sure you equip whatever you want to wear before entering a portal.
  • Items cannot be dropped in any part of the game, so make sure you don't take un-necessary items (pick up random arrows etc. off the ground), as you will have to carry it for the duration of the game.
  • You can trade in the Waiting Room, as well as in the Arena, so you can share bandages etc. with team mates.
  • Every player can enjoy Castle Wars, although richer players or players with a high combat level have a distinct advantage when playing. Pure accounts are not effective when playing, as there is no level restriction to who you can attack and your defence level along with any defence boosts provided by the armour you wear makes a difference, unlike PvM in NR.

The Rewards

To buy rewards with your CastleWars Points, talk to Mamma Bufetta in the Northern part of the Castle Wars Lobby.

The Interface to Redeem Tokens

From left to right, the rewards are (note: I can't afford any of this stuff so I can't show a picture of the stats of the items):
All Spirit Shields require 75 defence to wield and have a (+10) prayer bonus.
  • Arcane Spirit Shield - 500 points
  • Elysian Spirit Shield - 500 points

Special Ability: The shield has a 75% chance of reducing the damage you recieve by 25%.
  • Divine Spirit Shield - 500 points

Special Ability: The shield always lowers all damage received by 30%, at the cost of having 5% of this 30% drained from your prayer. This is overcome in Castle Wars however, as the Bandages restore prayer.
  • Staff of Light - 750 points

Special Ability: 20% magic damage boost. (Same effect as Slayer Helmet, but magic only. Effect stacks with Slayer Helmet.)
  • Antique Lamp - 100 points
Gives 75k xp in non-combat stats and 50k xp in combat stats.
  • Amulet of Fury - 40 points
  • Clue Scroll (Medium) - 15 points
Can be completed to recieve a casket. http://www.near-reality.com/forums/g...pot-guide.html
  • Infinity Robes (Blue) - Top: 1200 points, Hood: 800 points, Bottom: 1000 points

Starting a Game
  • To begin playing Castle Wars, choose a portal to enter. When you enter one, you will be teleported to the team's Waiting Area.
  • Entering the Blue Portal teleports you to the Saradomin Waiting Area, entering the Zamorak Portal teleports you to the Zamorak Waiting Area and entering the Guthix Portal teleports you to the team with least players. If the teams are balanced, entering the Guthix Portal will send you to a random team.
  • Displayed at the top in the Waiting Area is a countdown to when the next game begins, and counters showing how many people are in each team. The times until the next game begins are also displayed in the chat-box, at 15 minutes remaining, 10 minutes remaining, 5 minutes remaining and 59 seconds remaining. (For the ones with "minutes remaining", read on.)
Note: The timers are not accurate. When it says xx minutes remaining, 1 minute should be added onto the time left to gain a more accurate time. If it says xx seconds remaining though it is accurate!

The Zamorak Waiting Area

To keep the games even, you cannot join a team that has more people than the other. For example, if Saradomin has 10 players and Zamorak has 9, you can not join Saradomin and can only join it if someone else joins Zamorak or leaves Saradomin.
Each Castle Wars game lasts 20 minutes, along with a 5 minute waiting time where people use the bank, and join their team.
If you are poisoned, and are on the verge of dying, re-log during this time!

Features of the Arena

After the countdown has finished, you will be teleported to your teams waiting room.
The Castles are exactly the same for each teams, the only difference being that they are for the different teams.

An overview of the Castle Wars arena.

The waiting room, where you respawn if you die.

Bandages can be obtained from the table. These heal HP and Prayer. (Exact amounts unknown - will post when I find out.)

Going up leads you to this area:

Going up again leads you to where your flag is located, protect it!:

Going down leads to this area, as well as the main battlegrounds:

Here, on the tables, you can pick up these items:
  • Pickaxe : Used to clear the rocks in the underground tunnels. (It's bronze...BTW)
  • Barricade : Impedes any player. Used to block vital pathways for the enemy etc... Can be cleared by dealing enough damage to it or destroying it with an Explosive Potion
  • Explosive Potion : Used to instantly destroy a barricade. Items cannot be dropped in the arena, so you won't suffer damage from trying to drop one!

The other items have no use in NRCW - Near Reality Castle Wars.

The middle island, where a lot of the fighting happens. The ladders lead to the Underground Tunnels:

This is the fastest way to reach the enemy Castle, although the most dangerous.

The Underground Tunnels, which are underground and are a series of tunnels:

Shown, are the rocks which block each path. These must be mined with the pickaxe you can obtain to gain access. This is the safer way to reach the enemy base undisturbed as not much fighting goes down here.

The Stepping Stones:

This is a much slower way to get between the bases. However, rarely does fighting occur in this area, so flag holders commonly use either this way to return to their own Castle or they use the Underground Tunnels.

In the top left hand corner, are the status of each team's flag.
  • Safe next to your flag means that the enemy flag is safe.
  • Dropped next to your flag means that the enemy flag has been dropped.
  • Taken next to your flag means that you have taken the enemy flag.
In other words, what is displayed next to your flag is the enemy flag's status and visa versa. The top status is the enemy's flag status, the bottom status is your flag's status.

Thanks for reading! Munchlaxx

Important!
There is a glitch, where if you die at the last second of the game, you will end up being teleported out to one of the random places you get teleported to and end up dying outside the portal resulting in the loss of all items, because you are skulled when you attack someone in NRCW. Unless you had the Protect Item prayer on and typed ::prot to avoid the prayer glitch, you will lose all items. If you were using the prayer, you keep one item.
Fix:In the last 59 seconds of the game, I suggest staying in your teams respawn room. In the 20 minutes you are very likely to have already dealt the damage needed to gain points. It doesn't hurt, apart from you have to wait a minute; but you don't lose your bank at least!

There are a lot more, this might take some time to think of...but that is the major one!
